Day 4: Flower Crafts and Futball

Wednesday was a much needed visitation day after yesterday's hard work at the clinic.   We visited a primary school in the morning where the students did some crafts with two different classes.  In the afternoon, we visited an after-school program where we did more crafts and then stopped at a local orphanage for a game of "futball" aka soccer.

Mr. Breen started the day with some phone calls home and coffee.
Mr. MacKay's shoes - proof of the stuck truck stories from yesterday.

Laundry delivery or drop-off.

Our resident nurses preparing for the day.
Clementina Cabeza - an elementary school.
The front gates of the school.
Strange to see such blatant advertising and pop promotion inside the school grounds.
The first of the two classrooms we visited.
The students greeted us with a song.
Our drivers, Pedro and Chepe, watching from outside.
Our craft team, the Wark sisters, had prepared some flowers for the kids to decorate.
They loved them.

More students.
Kristen Wark, hard at work.

Sadly, we could not visit all the classes, despite their apparent interest in us.
Our next stop was at an after-school program made up of hastily built shacks.  This is the director.

The playground

Students in one of the three classes we visited.  This one was the coolest because it was missing a wall.

A very cute 3 year old.

One class did not take part, but they were intrigued by us.

In case of Earthquake, do not use elevator.

Our interpreter, Samuel.  He laughs like this a lot.

Washroom Break.
Our last stop - an orphanage.

The kids were incredibly friendly, offering hugs right away.

Nicole Wark falling in love with some of the kids.

Again, they loved the cameras.

Samuel, showing us a cashew fruit.  The trees grew on the orphanage grounds.

Pre-game warm-up.

Body language is often all that was needed.
The game begins.  Pedro started as our goalie.

Battling for the ball.

Lexy Mahon with a good boot.

Mr. MacKay being very aggressive.

Their star player.  He scored an amazing goal from deep in the corner.

Emma Fuller working hard.

Mr. MacKay looking a little awkward.

Another very good player.  Notice the bare feet.

Chepe and Samuel played on our team.  We needed them.

Game Over.

The home team won 3-2 and fun was had by all.

Finally, I have had some requests for pictures.

Mr. Breen's request.  Jacqueline making sure Amanda smells okay.

My wife's request.  A photo of me where I don't look so bad.  Although I am not sure I look much better here.  Happier, at least.

Tomorrow we leave for Chindendaga for two days and since I am not sure we will have internet access, I may not be able to post anything until Saturday or Sunday.  But I am sure we will have some stories to tell.  Until then.

If you did not see the newest comment, we would be happy to pass any questions you have onto our students.  To do so, please post them in the comments section below and we will post the answers as soon as possible.
